Who Owns MBNA?

So, who own MBNA? And who owns the Halifax credit card?

Lloyds Banking Group purchased MBNA Limited in June 2017. Lloyds Banking Group is also the ultimate owner of the Halifax, as well as Bank of Scotland.

As a result, both MBNA and Halifax credit cards, in the UK, are now ultimately owned by Lloyds Banking Group. The Lloyds 0% interest credit cards are also issued by Lloyds Banking Group. However, it is still not yet clear how this will ultimately effect the relationship between all of these different credit cards over the longer term.

Will balance transfers be allowed between the MBNA and Lloyds brands? Will Halifax to Lloyds balance transfers be allowed in the future? Can a Lloyds credit card customer also hold an MBNA credit card? None of this is yet clear. It is however, likely that in the future, Lloyds Banking Group will treat all of their credit cards as being from the same company.

Are MBNA And Halifax Linked?

Back in 2007, Halifax sold and then transferred some of it’s existing credit card accounts. These cards went to MBNA Europe Limited. This is part of the reason that some UK credit card customers may be unsure about any possible Halifax MBNA relationship.

The credit cards that were transferred across from the Halifax, were a number of charity and affinity credit cards. These cards formed only a very small part of the overall Halifax credit card business. The following page has a MBNA credit card list, showing all of the UK credit cards, that they used to issue, including for example, the AA credit card.

Customers of these transferred credit card accounts were given a new MBNA credit card, after the sale had completed. These new account numbers replaced their existing Halifax credit card. None of the main Halifax branded credit cards were ever sold, or transferred over, as part of this deal.

So in summary, the answer to the Halifax MBNA question, is that currently there is no direct link between the two credit card companies.

This may well change in the future as the MBNA takeover by Lloyds Banking Group is fully integrated. One result so far, has been a very large reduction in the range of cards issued by MBNA, in the UK.
