Lloyds Banking Group is the ultimate owner of Halifax and Bank of Scotland. Lloyds Banking Group purchased MBNA Limited in June 2017. However, it is not yet clear how this will ultimately effect the relationship between Halifax and MBNA credit cards over the longer term.

Are MBNA And Halifax Linked?

Back in 2007 Halifax sold and then transferred some of it’s existing credit card accounts. These cards went to MBNA Europe Limited. This is part of the reason that some UK credit card customers may be unsure about a possible Halifax MBNA relationship.

The credit cards that were transferred across from the Halifax, were charity and affinity credit cards. These cards formed only a very small part of the overall Halifax credit card business.

Customers of these transferred credit card accounts were reissued with a new MBNA credit card after the transfer. These new account numbers replaced their existing Halifax credit card. None of the main Halifax branded credit cards were ever sold or transferred over.

So in summary, the answer to the Halifax MBNA question, is that currently there is no direct link between the two credit card companies. This may well change in the future as the MBNA takeover by Lloyds Banking Group is fully integrated.
