Halifax MBNA?

Halifax MBNA

Is MBNA Halifax? Are Halifax and MBNA linked? Is MBNA part of Halifax?

Many UK credit card customers are looking for an answer to these MBNA Halifax related questions. This usually occurs when customers are starting to think about a new credit card application.

Customers very often look for a new card, to make a 0% balance transfer, or to take advantage of the 0% introductory offer on purchases.

Before applying for their new credit card, many customers would like to know the answer to the questions listed above, are Halifax and MBNA linked?

Is MBNA Part Of Halifax?

Many UK card customers, now understand that you can not make a balance transfer between two credit cards that are issued by the same card company.

In addition, some credit card providers will not allow a customer to have another credit card from the same company. This applies if you already have one of their existing credit cards.

So are Halifax and MBNA linked?

The answer to the above question is that, at the moment, they are separate companies. All of the current Halifax credit cards are issued by Bank of Scotland Plc. All of the current MBNA credit cards are issued by MBNA Limited.

Who Owns MBNA?

So who own MBNA?

Lloyds Banking Group purchased MBNA Limited in June 2017. Lloyds Banking Group is also the ultimate owner of Halifax and Bank of Scotland.

As a result, both MBNA and Halifax, as well as Lloyds 0% interest credit cards in the UK, are now ultimately owned by Lloyds Banking Group. However, it is still not yet clear how this will ultimately effect the relationship between these different credit cards over the longer term.

Will balance transfers be allowed between the MBNA and Lloyds brands? Will Halifax to Lloyds balance transfers be allowed in the future? Can a Lloyds credit card customer also hold an MBNA credit card? None of this is yet clear. It is likely that in the future, Lloyds Banking Group will treat all their credit cards as from the one card company.

The following popular featured UK credit cards will however, allow balance transfers from any of the Lloyds Banking Group credit cards:-

Are MBNA And Halifax Linked?

Back in 2007, Halifax sold and then transferred some of it’s existing credit card accounts. These cards went to MBNA Europe Limited. This is part of the reason that some UK credit card customers may be unsure about any possible Halifax MBNA relationship.

The credit cards that were transferred across from the Halifax, were charity and affinity credit cards. These cards formed only a very small part of the overall Halifax credit card business. This page has a MBNA credit card list, showing all of the UK credit cards, that they used to issue, including the AA credit card.

Customers of these transferred credit card accounts were reissued with a new MBNA credit card after the sale completed. These new account numbers replaced their existing Halifax credit card. None of the main Halifax branded credit cards were ever sold, or transferred over.

So in summary, the answer to the Halifax MBNA question, is that currently there is no direct link between the two credit card companies.

This may well change in the future as the MBNA takeover by Lloyds Banking Group is fully integrated. One result so far, has been a large reduction in the number of cards issued by MBNA in the UK.
