HSBC Credit Cards Eligibility?

All of the different credit card companies have differing application criteria. So, what is the HSBC credit card eligibility? Who can apply for a HSBC credit card in the UK?

If you are applying online for a new HSBC credit card you do not need to be a HSBC Bank customer already. If you have a current account with another bank, then you can still apply for a HSBC credit card.

Existing HSBC customers will however, find the application process quicker. This is because the bank will fill part of the HSBC credit card application form online for you. The bank will fill the form with the details they already know about you, like your address, for example. This will only happen if you apply for a HSBC credit card, when logged into HSBC online banking.

HSBC credit card applications can be made by customers who meet the following criteria:-

  • Have an annual income or pension before tax of £6,800 or more
  • Are UK resident
  • Are aged 18 or over
  • And do not hold an HSBC Basic bank account

HSBC Credit Card Limit?

What credit limit is likely with a HSBC credit card?

The credit limit given to a new HSBC credit card customer will vary. The limit will be based on the individual financial circumstances of each customer. One customer may get a credit card with a £3000 limit, for example, another customer may get a £5000 credit card limit.

The bank will use the information provided by the customer as part of their application, in order to calculate a suitable credit limit, specific to that customer. This information, including monthly income and outgoings, as well as the information provided by a credit reference agency, will be used in the credit limit decision process.

HSBC Credit Card Application Decision?

Once you apply for a HSBC credit card, how long does HSBC take to approve the credit card?

Many customers will receive an online decision at the end of the HSBC credit card application process. With an online decision you will know immediately whether you have been accepted, or declined, for a HSBC credit card.

In a small number of cases however, the credit card decision maybe referred. If this happens, then you will see a notice, at the end of the application, that HSBC will be in touch. When this happens, the application will be passed to a credit analyst within the bank. This analyst may then request further information from you, in order to make a decision.

Once your HSBC credit card application has been approved, your new credit card will be delivered to your home address within 3 to 5 working days.

HSBC Visa Credit Card or HSBC Mastercard?

Do new HSBC credit card customers receive a HSBC Visa credit card or a HSBC Mastercard credit card?

Most UK customers who make a HSBC credit card application, and are approved, currently receive a HSBC Visa credit card.

The now removed HSBC Rewards credit card was one of the few cards from HSBC, in the UK, which used the Mastercard payment network. HSBC Mastercard credit cards have however, been issued in the UK in previous years in much greater numbers.

All of the current HSBC Visa credit cards, and Mastercard cards, are accepted at petrol stations, retailers, hotels, restaurants and millions of other locations, in the UK and around the world, that accept Visa or Mastercard credit, and debit cards.
